Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)

An overactive thyroid, often referred to as hyperthyroidism or thyrotoxicosis, occurs when the thyroid gland generates an excess of thyroid hormones. This small, butterfly-shaped gland is located in the neck, just in front of the windpipe (trachea). The hormones produced by the thyroid play a crucial role in regulating various bodily functions, including heart rate and body temperature. When there is an overproduction of these hormones, it can lead to uncomfortable and potentially serious health issues that may require treatment. While anyone can develop an overactive thyroid, it is approximately ten times more prevalent in women than in men, typically affecting individuals between the ages of 20 and 40.
