About Mr Muthu Krishna Lingam
Mr Muthu Krishna Lingam is a highly experienced consultant surgeon based in Derbyshire. His specialises in general, vascular and endocrine surgery, with particular focus on the management of hernias, varicose veins, haemorrhoids (piles), gallbladder conditions, as well as thyroid and parathyroid surgery. He privately practises at Nuffield Health Derby Hospital and his NHS base is the Royal Derby Hospital, part of University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. Mr Lingam graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1986. His surgical training was based in the West of Scotland over a 12-year period, where he was mentored by several eminent surgeons. He gained comprehensive experience across a range of surgical disciplines including upper and lower gastrointestinal, vascular, and endocrine surgery. In 1994, he completed a doctorate (MD) on the surgical management of malignant melanoma. He holds fellowships with both the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS Ed) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (FRCS Glas), awarded in 1991. Mr Lingam offers a wide spectrum of procedures, from minor day-case treatments to complex surgeries. These include hernia repair, both open and laparoscopic, gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy), haemorrhoidectomy and treatment for anal fissures, varicose vein treatments including radiofrequency ablation and foam sclerotherapy, and thyroid and parathyroid surgery. He also performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including gastroscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy, excision of skin lesions, and colorectal surgery for benign conditions. His vascular work covers arterial bypass, carotid surgery, and aortic aneurysm repair. His care extends to patients experiencing symptoms such as rectal bleeding, abdominal pain and gastrointestinal issues, offering comprehensive diagnostic evaluation followed by personalised surgical management where needed. Since becoming a consultant surgeon in 1999, Mr Lingam has played a leading role in developing vascular services in Derbyshire. He helped expand the vascular unit at Royal Derby Hospitals into a multidisciplinary team of seven consultants and six interventional radiologists. In 2013, he led the successful integration of North and South Derbyshire vascular services to create a county-wide service, improving patient access and care coordination. Mr Lingam has been recognised for his research with the Amgen Roche Award for his work in sentinel node biopsy. He has published extensively in vascular medicine and malignant melanoma and has contributed to book chapters and peer-reviewed journals. He supervises doctoral research and mentoring junior surgeons through presentations at national and international conferences. Mr Lingam is a member of several professional associations, including the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the Association of Vascular Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the British Medical Association, and the Derby Medical Society.
