About Mr Jason Fleming
Mr Jason Fleming is an internationally renowned consultant ENT/head and neck surgeon based in Liverpool. He treats the full range of head and neck conditions, with particular expertise in cancer, robotic surgery, thyroid surgery, tonsil disorders, neck lumps, salivary gland disorders, voice disorders, and obstructive sleep apnoea. He is also a leader in minimally invasive techniques, and was the first head and neck surgeon in Europe to perform transoral cancer resections on the new DaVinci Single Port surgical robotic system. Mr Fleming graduated from Imperial College London in 2005 and undertook higher surgical training in otolaryngology/head & neck surgery across London and the South East of England, with specialist placements at esteemed institutions including St George’s and Great Ormond Street Hospitals. In 2010, he completed a master’s degree in Surgical Education at Imperial College London, and in 2017, he was awarded a PhD in cancer biology from the University of Southampton. He went on to complete an advanced head and neck surgical fellowship at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in 2019 and was the first trainee in the UK to be selected for the renowned Ablative and Reconstructive Head and Neck Fellowship at the University of Alabama. Here, his skills were enriched at one of the highest volume comprehensive cancer centres in the USA, with dedicated training in transoral robotic surgery (TORS). Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Fleming is a leading researcher and educator. He is Reader in Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Liverpool and runs an extensive clinical trials programme within the Liverpool Head & Neck Centre, attracting over £2.3 million in research funding. His research interests include the following subjects: Surgical innovation, particularly intraoperative imaging and robotics. Development and evaluation of novel cancer therapies. Examining the latest methods of radiotherapy delivery. Investigating the immune biology of head & neck cancers. Mr Fleming is Co-Chief Investigator of PROTIS, a national phase-III trial comparing proton beam therapy with intensity-modulated radiotherapy for sinonasal cancer. He led on the latest UK national guidelines for sinonasal malignancy, has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, and serves as a Review Editor for Frontiers in Oncology. At the University of Liverpool, he is the Clinical Academic Lead for the Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology, he teaches across master’s-level cancer science modules and delivers anatomy teaching to medical students. He is also the Shaun Jackson Fellowship Director at Aintree University Hospital, helping to train the next generation of leaders in head and neck surgery. Beyond academia, he is committed to public engagement, regularly contributing to community events and co-leading one of the world’s most visited head and neck educational websites, serving both patients and healthcare professionals.
