Varicose eczema
Varicose eczema, sometimes referred to as venous, gravitational, or stasis eczema, is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the lower legs. It is often seen in individuals with varicose veins. Although varicose eczema can be a persistent issue, there are treatments available that can help manage and control the symptoms effectively.
When to seek medical help
If you notice symptoms of varicose eczema, it's advisable to see a GP. They can often diagnose the condition just by examining your skin. The doctor will ask you questions to assess whether there's an issue with blood circulation in your leg veins, which is the primary cause of varicose eczema. To aid in the diagnosis, your GP might inquire about any previous health issues you've had, such as: varicose veins – swollen and enlarged veins; DVT (deep vein thrombosis) – a blood clot in your leg veins; leg ulcers – areas of skin damage that take a long time to heal; cellulitis – an infection affecting deeper skin layers and underlying tissue; or any surgery or injuries to your legs. Your GP may also conduct an examination.
