Female genital mutilation (FGM)

Female genital mutilation (FGM) refers to the intentional cutting, injury, or alteration of the female genitalia without any medical justification. This practice is also referred to as female circumcision or cutting, and it goes by various other names, including Sunna, gudniin, halalays, tahur, megrez, and khitan, among others. FGM typically occurs in young girls, generally between infancy and the age of 15, and is most often performed before the onset of puberty. In the UK, it is considered illegal and classified as child abuse.
