Breath-holding in babies and children

Breath-holding occurs when a baby or child temporarily stops breathing for up to one minute and may faint. This can happen in response to fear, distress, anger, or sudden shock or pain. While it is generally harmless, it can be alarming for parents, especially during the first occurrence. Although these signs may indicate breath-holding, they could also be linked to other, more serious health issues. If a doctor has not previously diagnosed it as breath-holding, it’s essential to have it evaluated right away. Your child might feel drowsy or disoriented for a brief period afterwards.
