Dr Castiello is a passionate and multi-faceted clinician whose dedication to excellence and innovation in cardiovascular care earned her the prestigious title of Cardiologist of the Year 2024 – UK, alongside global awards for Advancing Health with Technology and Global Impact in Healthcare, Helathcare Leader and Healthcare Woman Entrepreneur of the year. As an NHS consultant cardiologist and the founder and director of MIAL Healthcare, Dr Castiello is dedicated to advancing cardiology through clinical excellence, innovation, research and global collaboration. She currently serves as the chief investigator (CI) of the HF track trial, a pioneering study on the use of Artificial Intelligence in heart failure, and is the CI of an interantioank multicentric clinical trial on pericarditis. Beyond her roles as a chief investigator, she is a principal investigator (PI) on multiple other clinical trials and has contributed extensively to international medical literature as an author and co-author of ESC Clinical Consensus papers. Her work as a digital health expert includes a former membership in the Patient Care and Digital Health Committee of the European Heart Failure Association (HFA of ESC), where she remains actively engaged in numerous projects for both clinical and research purposes. Her leadership extends to the highest levels of international cardiology societies. Dr. Castiello is an Executive Board Member of the European Nucleus of Cardiomyopathy of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), a representative on the Genomic Council of the ESC, and a member of the Inflammatory Cardiomyopathy Committee of the European Heart Failure Association. Notably, she is the immediate past President of the Royal Society of Medicine (Cardiology Section), distinguishing herself as the first woman to ever hold that role. As a Medical Science Communicator, she excels at making complex medical topics accessible to the public through TV, radio and social media engagement and educational outreach, while serving as a role model and advocate for diversity, inclusion, and the advancement of women in medicine. Dr Castiello’s commitment to healthcare as a universal right is evidenced by her significant humanitarian work in developing countries. Between 2009 and 2011, she dedicated her professional and personal time to three major missions in Africa and East Jerusalem. Her longest mission was in Sudan, where she worked at the Salam Center for Cardiac Surgery on the outskirts of Khartoum. In this role, she screened patients with suspected or documented cardiac diseases to select those suitable for life-saving heart surgery. In Kenya, she evaluated the suitability for creating a dedicated cardiac surgery unit and provided essential training to local medical staff. In East Jerusalem, she proudly collaborated with a children’s NGO, ensuring that specialised cardiac care reached vulnerable paediatric populations. Dr Castiello graduated in medicine and surgery with honours from La Sapienza University, Rome, in 2001, where she completed her medical and initial cardiology training (MD). In 2009, she achieved her specialisation in cardiology at the University Campus Bio-Medico, Rome. These academic foundations, combined with nearly 25 years of international experience spanning Italy, the UK, and several developing nations, have shaped her into a clinician who thrives on innovation and the belief that high-quality, compassionate healthcare should be available to everyone, regardless of their circumstances.
