About Mr Paul Tomlins
Mr Paul John Tomlins is a leading consultant ophthalmologist based in Cheltenham and Gloucestershire who specialises in corneal and complex cataract surgery, including lamellar and penetrating corneal transplantations. In addition to cataract and cornea procedures, he is an expert in the treatment and management of keratoconus and ocular surface diseases, such as dry eye disease. Alongside his NHS post at Gloucestershire Hospitals, Mr Tomlins currently sees patients at his private practice and at Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital. Mr Tomlins completed his medical training at the University of Birmingham in 2001 before going on to undertake his ophthalmological training at Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, in the West Midlands. He joined the University of Birmingham as a clinical lecturer in 2009, teaching medical students and developing his research interest in dry eye disease. His investigation of the immunology of the ocular surface in patients with severe dry eye disease would later win the Bron Award in 2013. He then went on to accomplish a corneal and anterior segment surgery fellowship in 2014 at Nottingham University Hospital under the guidance of esteemed Professor Harminder Dua, acquiring specialist proficiency in complex corneal and ocular surface disease. That same year, Mr Tomlins obtained his FCROphth and was appointed locum consultant at Gloucestershire Hospitals. In 2015, he took up a position at Cheltenham General Hospital, where he continued his interest in simulated surgical teaching and developed the hospital’s corneal service, introducing corneal cross-linking techniques that prioritised patients and their needs. Mr Tomlins was awarded an MD from the University of Birmingham in 2018. Besides his ophthalmology practice, Mr Tomlins publishes his academic work in peer-reviewed scientific journals and is an active member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
