About Dr Vishal C. Patel

Dr Vishal Patel is a consultant hepatologist and endoscopist with extensive experience across the full spectrum of liver disease. His expertise includes the management of abnormal liver function tests, hepatitis, alcohol-related and metabolic-associated steatotic (fat) liver disease, autoimmune liver conditions, liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and Fibroscan interpretation. He is skilled in both upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, with advanced therapeutic capabilities. Dr Patel is based at the world-renowned Liver Unit at King's College Hospital, where he cares for patients with chronic liver disease and its complications. At Cleveland Clinic London, he works as part of a leading hepatology team, delivering high-quality care that is both compassionate and professional. He obtained his medical degree from Guy's & St Thomas' Medical School, followed by specialist training in complex hepatology, liver intensive care, transplantation, and interventional endoscopy at King's College Hospital. In addition to his clinical work, Dr Patel leads translational research at the Roger Williams Institute of Hepatology as a Principal Investigator. Building on his doctorate thesis, his research group explores the role of the microbiome, gut inflammation, and cell-free DNA pathways in liver and gastrointestinal diseases, with the aim of improving understanding and advancing new treatments. He has been appointed Adjunct Reader in Hepatology at King's College London. Dr Patel also serves as the British Association for Study of the Liver's Clinical Lead for Liver Research, overseeing the national research portfolio. He has secured major funding from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) to run one of the UK’s largest liver disease prevention trials, alongside support from the Intensive Care Society and the Association of Physicians (UK). He continues to publish widely and lecture internationally, contributing to scientific advancement and fostering global collaboration. Dr Patel is deeply committed to preventative and holistic healthcare. He places patients at the heart of decision-making, providing expert guidance on optimising conventional treatments while integrating suitable alternative approaches to create tailored, individualised care plans.
