About Mr Tanujan Thangarajah

Mr Tanujan (Tan) Thangarajah is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon in London exclusively specialising in all shoulder and elbow conditions — including shoulder pain, sports/ski injuries, frozen shoulder, rotator cuff injury, shoulder instability, tendonitis, tennis elbow, clavicle and ACJ injuries, bicep tears and arthritis. He cares for patients of all ages, from those recovering from simple falls or workplace strains to athletes with high-demand performance goals. He provides private care at The Princess Grace Hospital and Bishops Wood Hospital. In the NHS, he is a Consultant at University College London Hospitals (UCLH), where he has a tertiary service managing complex cases such as shoulder instability, SLAP tears, rotator cuff tears, elbow stiffness and revision surgery for failed operations performed elsewhere. Mr Thangarajah offers comprehensive non-surgical and surgical care including keyhole surgery (arthroscopy) of the shoulder, keyhole surgery (arthroscopy) of the elbow, tendon repair, joint preservation surgery, biologic treatments to improve tendon healing, and shoulder replacement when needed for advanced osteoarthritis. He is highly experienced in treating acute trauma including a broken collarbone, fractured shoulder, fractured humerus and fractures of the elbow — ensuring rapid access to imaging and timely treatment to protect long-term function. His clinical work is grounded in a strong academic foundation. He completed a PhD in rotator cuff tendon healing at University College London and has contributed widely to research on shoulder instability and tendon healing. His academic output has been published and presented internationally. His training includes world-renowned fellowships in shoulder and elbow surgery at the University of Cambridge and the University of Calgary in Canada, where he gained experience treating elite athletes including Olympians, skiers and rugby players. He applies the same high standard of care to all patients, aiming to restore comfort, mobility and confidence through clear diagnosis and tailored treatment planning. Mr Thangarajah prioritises accurate diagnosis, clear communication and shared decision-making. Whether addressing sports injuries, degenerative shoulder osteoarthritis, ulnar nerve compression or persistent elbow pain, he tailors each treatment plan to the individual. His management includes both surgical and non-operative options, supported by a multidisciplinary team of radiologists, physiotherapists and sports medicine specialists to ensure seamless care from assessment through recovery. His qualifications include MB ChB (Hons), MSc (Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery), PhD (Rotator Cuff), FRCS (Tr&Orth) and postgraduate awards in medical education (PgCert, MAcadMEd). He continues to train surgeons nationally and contribute to advances in shoulder and elbow care. Mr Thangarajah is dedicated to restoring comfort, strength and independence — helping patients return to work, sport and everyday life without pain.
