About Miss Sonia Mall

Miss Sonia Mall is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in Surrey. She specialises in the treatment of cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, eyelid cyst removals, and macula oedema. Miss Mall qualified from the University of Southampton in 2005, and completed ophthalmic specialist training in the West Midlands and Oxford. She has experience working at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre and Oxford Eye Hospital, and completed a fellowship at the prestigious Moorfield’s Eye Hospital in medical retina. In 2012, she became a fellow and was awarded a diploma from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and in 2014, after being inducted to the General Medical Council Specialist Register, she was appointed consultant. She has previously been the clinical lead for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) at the West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, and has been a substantive consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust. Her ophthalmic subspeciality is complex cataract surgery and medical retina with a specialist interest in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic eye disease, and retinal vein occlusions. She is highly skilled in the manahement of retinal and macular dieases, utilising laser and intravitreal thearpies. She also provides services to treat glaucoma, uveitis, and general ophthalmology. In addition to her clinical practice, in which she has performed over 10,000 cataract surgeries, she has several published articles in various peer-reviewed journals. She is a co-author of a chapter on diabetic retinopathy, has presented her research at national and internal conferences, and has been a sub-investigator in clinical trials which investigated the use of intravitreal treatment for AMD and vitreomacular traction. She has been involved in medical education, training and teaching ophthalmology trainees, students, and collegues. She is a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the Association for Research in Vision & Ophthalmology.
