About Mr Shivakumar Shankar

Mr Shivakumar Shankar is a consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon based in Essex, with specialist expertise in knee replacement, knee arthroscopy and arthroscopic meniscectomy, alongside hip replacement, anterior cruciate ligament and hip arthroscopy. He privately practises at Nuffield Health Brentwood Hospital, while his NHS base is Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, where he also serves as the infection lead for trauma and orthopaedics and clinical audit lead for the department. Mr Shankar has a particular interest in the use of advanced technology, including robotic and computer-assisted surgery, to improve precision and outcomes. He was the first surgeon to perform a computer-assisted total hip replacement in the Essex and North East London area and continues to provide PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections and cartilage reconstruction as part of his minimally invasive treatment options. Mr Shankar completed his undergraduate training at Bangalore University in India and pursued further qualifications including an MSc in Trauma and Orthopaedics, FRCSEd (Tr & Orth), and a PG Diploma in Computer and Robotic Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery. He undertook his higher surgical training on the prestigious Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) rotation and trained in prominent London institutions such as the Royal London Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital. He is fellowship trained in lower limb arthroplasty, completing the RNOH Stanmore fellowship and a specialist fellowship in computer-navigated surgery at the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Glasgow. He also undertook a travelling fellowship in Germany with Professor Wagner’s team, focusing on anterior approach hip arthroplasty, with whom he maintains academic links. Mr Shankar is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the British Orthopaedic Association and Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery (CAOS) UK. He is committed to offering individualised, evidence-based care and consistently aims to deliver optimal results using the latest surgical techniques.
