About Dr Shashank Sharma

Dr Shashank Sharma is a renowned respiratory consultant known for delivering care that is both respectful and tailored to each patient’s individual needs. He is deeply committed to a holistic approach in managing chronic respiratory conditions. Dr Shashank Sharma earned his MBBS in 2002 from TN Dr MGR Medical University in Chennai, India. Driven by a keen interest in Respiratory Medicine, he pursued a Diploma in Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases from the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, Delhi, in 2004. That same year, he moved to the UK and began his career with the NHS, working towards becoming a Respiratory Consultant. He completed his core medical training in Wales before advancing to higher specialist training in Respiratory Medicine in London. In April 2008, Dr Sharma was awarded the Best Newcomer Prize during his first year of higher training. He also obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education, reflecting his dedication to teaching and mentoring in medicine. He completed his specialist training in 2014 and has since worked as a respiratory consultant. Dr Sharma currently practises at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (ASPH), where he has pioneered the introduction of Medical Thoracoscopy—now a well-regarded service within the Trust. He also established a multidisciplinary collaboration with Royal Brompton Hospital to enhance the management of Pulmonary Fibrosis patients at ASPH. In addition to his clinical duties, Dr Sharma serves as the respiratory lead for undergraduate education and frequently delivers educational outreach sessions to primary care providers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Sharma led the respiratory department’s response at ASPH. He developed expertise in managing both acute and long-term COVID-19 cases and, with colleagues, introduced virtual clinics using home oximetry to support patients remotely—an approach that became nationally adopted during the pandemic’s second wave. In recognition of his contributions, Dr Sharma has received Clinical Excellence Awards in both 2017 and 2020.
