About Mr Shankar Chandrasekharan

Mr Shankar Chandrasekharan is a consultant urological surgeon in Solihull, with expertise in blood in urine (haematuria), prostate assessment and BPH surgery, alongside kidney stones, testicular and scrotal disease, kidney cancer and raised PSA. He privately practises at Spire Parkway Hospital, while his NHS base is University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, where he also serves as Audit lead and Antimicrobial lead for Urology. Mr Chandrasekharan graduated from the University of Shefield and underwent his higher training in general urology via the West Midlands Higher Surgical Training Scheme and has developed a particular subspecialist interest in stone disease, laparoscopic and robotic kidney surgery. He has been practising as a consultant since 2012, initially at Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool, where he established the kidney laparoscopy and laser stone treatment services. Since then, he has continued to provide comprehensive urological care, including treatment of voiding difficulties, scrotal and penile conditions, and a full range of urinary investigations. He has significant surgical experience, having performed or acted as mentor in more than 500 nephrectomy/kidney removal surgeries and over 500 ureteroscopic laser stone surgeries. All his surgical outcomes are recorded and data till 2019 are available through the British Association of Urological Surgeons website (when the national audits stopped being recorded. Subsequent audit data is presented and discussed within the NHS Trust audits. He has acted as a mentor for kidney surgery for new colleagues locally and at City / Sandwell Hospital. He is also trained in robotic (DaVinci) kidney surgery which is performed at University Hospital Birmingham. Mr Chandrasekharan holds an MD and MBChB from the University of Sheffield and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS Urol). He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS (Urol)) and a member of the European Association of Urology.
