About Professor Michael A G Heneghan

Professor Michael Heneghan is a world renowned hepatologist in London. He is recognised internationally for his expertise in managing complex liver related problems. He has a special interest in autoimmune liver disease including autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis. He has over 25 years of clinical experience in the field of liver transplantation and cirrhosis. Professor Heneghan qualified in medicine from University College Dublin Ireland and trained in Ireland, the United Kingdom and in the United States of America. He was Assistant Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of Liver Transplantation at Duke University Medical Centre Durham North Carolina, before returning as a consultant hepatologist to King's College Hospital London. At King's College Hospital he has served as clinical director for liver services and gastroenterology, he has also been corporate medical director for a strategy and currently is clinical director for cancer services. Alongside his clinical work, Professor Heneghan has published studies, clinical trials and medical articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is a thought leader in the field of autoimmune liver disease, liver transplantation and pregnancy related liver disease. He has had multiple committee leadership roles in the British Society of Gastroenterology, British Association for the Study of the Liver. He has also contributed to British and European clinical practice guidelines on the management of autoimmune hepatitis, pregnancy related liver disease and cirrhosis. Professor Heneghan continues to enrich himself in the hepatology field by continuing to pursue basic and translational research in fields of liver autoimmunity, transplantation and end-stage liver disease.
