About Miss May Al-Sahaf
Miss May Al-Sahaf is a leading consultant cardiothoracic surgeon based in London, who specialises in lung cancer, robotic surgery and mediastinal tumours alongside pleural effusion, pneumothorax and bronchoscopy. She privately practises at London Bridge Hospital part of HCA Healthcare UK, Cromwell Hospital, OneWelbeck and Hammersmith Hospital Sainsbury Wing while her NHS base is Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHNT). Miss Al-Sahaf is highly qualified, receiving undergraduate education from The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland where she was awarded a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 2004. She then went to the UK where she undertook subspecialist cardiothoracic surgery training at various respected specialist units throughout London. These included St Bartholomew's Hospital, Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals as well as the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital. In 2018 she was awarded one of the first national training fellowships in Robotic Thoracic Surgery at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospital, and Miss Al-Sahaf, who has performed over 400 anatomical lung resections, is proficient in robotic surgery. Many of the procedures she has performed is via a video-assisted thoracoscopic approach. Miss Al-Sahaf also has subspecialty experience in complex chest wall resectionsand reconstruction for sarcoma, advanced emphysema surgery and bronchoscopic airway interventions including laser debulking and stenting. She is a respected name in clinical research, collaborating with colleagues at the National Heart and Lung Institute to set up the first fresh human lung tissue bank at ICHNT, which is now fully established. Her work has been published in various peer reviewed journals, while she has presented at various national and international conferences. Miss Al-Sahaf is also dedicated to passing down her medical knowledge. She is currently a member of the cardiothoracic specialty training committee at the London deanery and the unit training lead at ICHNT. Furthermore, she's a lead of the undergraduate cardiothoracic programme at ICHNHT and has been a course director of various cardiothoracic courses at SCTS and Health Education England. She is also a member of several professional organisations including the Royal College of Surgeons, England (RCS-Eng), the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland (SCTS) and the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS), alongside the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS) and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network (CTSNet).
