Dr Karolina Szumanska-Ryt
Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist
About Dr Karolina Szumanska-Ryt
Dr Karolina Szumanska-Ryt is a highly experienced consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist with extensive experience in assessing and treating a broad range of mental health and emotional difficulties in children and young people. Her expertise includes depression, anxiety, obsessive–compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, eating disorders, deliberate self-harm, ADHD, ASD, and Pervasive Arousal Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS). Her mission is to support your child in reaching their full potential and thriving. She recognises how profoundly mental health challenges can affect a child’s self-esteem and impact the entire family, and she is committed to providing compassionate, effective help. Her decision to pursue child and adolescent psychiatry stems from her passion for working with children and families, and from the unique opportunity this field offers for early intervention—something which can alter a child’s life course and positively influence the whole family. Dr Szumanska-Ryt completed her core psychiatric training in Cork and Kerry, Ireland. She later moved to England, gaining valuable experience on an Adolescent PICU before completing her Specialist Training in Manchester. She began her Consultant career on a children’s inpatient unit in central Manchester, supporting young people with neurodevelopmental conditions (including ADHD and ASD), eating disorders, depression, anxiety, psychosis, OCD, and PAWS. Her approach is holistic and family-centred. Dr Szumanska-Ryt understands that seeking a psychiatric assessment is often a long, emotionally taxing journey. It can feel overwhelming for both children and their parents, and she aims to create a safe, calm, and reassuring environment. She uses a thorough, empathetic, and collaborative method, offering guidance during difficult times. Together, you and Dr Szumanska-Ryt will explore the experiences that led you to seek support, work to understand your child’s challenges, and identify the strengths and protective factors within your family.
