About Mr John Afolayan

Mr John Afolayan is a consultant orthopaedic spinal surgeon with extensive training in both orthopaedic and neurosurgical spinal procedures. His clinical practice covers all areas of spinal surgery, with a special focus on the surgical treatment of spinal tumours and complex spinal conditions. He is one of the spinal sarcoma surgeons within the London Sarcoma Service. Mr Afolayan provides advice on both operative and non-operative treatments, with a strong emphasis on empowering patients to make informed decisions about their care. He has developed a practice that incorporates advanced technologies and minimally invasive techniques where suitable, aiming to enhance surgical safety and promote faster patient recovery. The RNOH Spinal Surgical Unit, together with Mr Afolayan, actively supports outcome tracking and remains committed to improving global care standards for spinal conditions through ongoing research. Mr Afolayan is deeply involved in education, mentoring and training. He holds the role of honorary lecturer and academic supervisor for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has numerous publications and has presented at national and international forums on topics including spinal surgery, spinal biomechanics, education, digital health and global health development. A man rooted in family and community values, Mr Afolayan serves as a strategic adviser to the London Mayoral Office and Greater London Authority. He is also engaged in a variety of community-focused initiatives both within the UK and internationally.
