About Ms Irene Athanasiou
Ms Irene Athanasiou is a consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon specialising in the diagnosis and surgical management of benign and malignant breast conditions. She is based at the Whittington Hospital and collaborates closely with other specialist teams at University College London Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital. She graduated with honours from the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and completed her specialist surgical training in London and Yorkshire. Her practice combines oncological safety with advanced oncoplastic and reconstructive techniques, enabling excellent clinical outcomes while preserving form, function, and confidence. Ms Athanasiou is recognised for her compassionate, patient-centred approach and for supporting women through every stage of care, from diagnosis and surgical planning to recovery and reconstruction. She works within multidisciplinary teams to ensure evidence-based, personalised treatment for each patient. In addition to her clinical work, Ms Athanasiou is actively involved in national research and clinical trials and supports the participation of eligible patients where appropriate, contributing to the advancement of breast cancer treatment and outcomes. She also undertakes educational and tutor responsibilities at UCL and acts as an educational and clinical supervisor for doctors in Foundation Year training. She established a dedicated Breast Pain Service in North Central London, reflecting her commitment to service development and improved access to specialist breast care. Outside of her clinical practice, she enjoys spending time with her family and has an interest in art and music.
