Mr Gnanamurthy Sivakumar is a distinguished consultant neurosurgeon with dual fellowships in functional and paediatric neurosurgery. Since beginning his training, he has performed over 3,000 neurosurgical procedures, with an exceptionally low infection rate compared to national benchmarks. He offers comprehensive expertise in adult and paediatric neurosurgery, with particular interest in complex spinal and brain conditions, including nerve conduction studies, lumbar discectomy, and spinal decompression. Appointed to Leeds Teaching Hospitals in 2013, Mr Sivakumar has spearheaded the development of several advanced neurosurgical services. He introduced functional neurosurgery to the unit and played a leading role in establishing multidisciplinary networks for managing adult and paediatric epilepsy, spasticity, and high-grade gliomas. He also helped implement stereotactic neurosurgery, spinal cord stimulation services, and is actively advancing deep brain stimulation for various movement disorders. His contributions have significantly enhanced the hospital’s neurosurgical capabilities and patient care standards. Mr Sivakumar is deeply committed to research, recognising its critical role in modern NHS practice and the professional development of future neurosurgeons. He has participated in national trials such as ICP Rescue and Stitch I and II, and has authored clinical research publications. He is a member of numerous professional bodies, including the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Society of British Neurological Surgeons, and several international neurological societies.
