About Dr Edward Johnston
Dr Edward Johnston is an accomplished and highly regarded Diagnostic and Interventional Radiologist at The Royal Marsden Hospital and Cromwell Hospital in London. His areas of expertise include tumour ablation, robotics, interventional oncology, biopsy, embolisation, and diagnostic radiology. Dr Johnston is renowned for his leadership in pioneering robotic ablation procedures, currently overseeing the largest robotic ablation program in the UK, and one of the largest in the world. Dr Johnston’s academic career has been defined by significant contributions to both clinical practice and research. He qualified in 2009 and completed his PhD in Magnetic Resonance Imaging from University College London in 2017. His academic interests are focused on developing and integrating new technologies into clinical practice, particularly in oncological interventions. In 2021, he established the first robotic Interventional Oncology Programme in the UK, and his ongoing work involves improving the precision and effectiveness of procedures such as Smart Biopsy, a novel technique for tumour sampling guided by advanced imaging. In addition to his clinical and academic roles, Dr Johnston is a recognised leader in his field. He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications and lectures internationally on image-guided therapy and interventional techniques. Dr Johnston is also a specialist advisor to NICE for interventional procedures and sits on the independent advisory board of the NIHR Clinical Research Facility. His work continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in interventional oncology, ensuring that patients benefit from the latest advances in medical technology.
