About Professor David Deehan
Professor David Deehan is a leading specialist in orthopaedic surgery with over two decades of experience as a lower limb reconstruction surgeon at Newcastle Hospitals Trust. He specialise in knee replacement, chondroplasty, hip revision, arthroscopy and arthroplasty. Since his appointment as a full-time NHS consultant in 2000, he has built a prestigious clinical career, ranking in the top 10% in the UK for knee revision arthroplasty by volume. His international training includes fellowships in Germany, the United States, and Australia, which have contributed to his comprehensive and innovative surgical approach. Throughout his career, he has combined clinical excellence with academic and research leadership. In 2007, he co-founded the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre and led the team that performed the first robotic total knee replacement in the North East. Appointed to a Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery in 2009, he has directed the academic department since 2013, overseeing the NIHR orthopaedic programme in the North East. His research interests span molecular biology, biomechanics, and patient-reported outcomes, with over 200 peer-reviewed publications and numerous national and international presentations to his name. Currently, Professor Deehan offers robotic-assisted Mako knee replacement at Nuffield Newcastle. His clinical philosophy focuses on integrating basic science with cutting-edge technology, always aiming to enhance patient outcomes and optimise recovery following surgical intervention.
