About Mr Anthony Gibbon
Mr Anthony Gibbon is a consultant orthopaedic specialist knee surgeon practising in York. He specialises in all aspects of the knee, including arthritis, injuries, replacements (both total and partial), ACL reconstruction, pain, and cartilage repair. Mr Gibbon introduced complex knee arthroscopic procedures to York in 1997. Mr Gibbon qualified in medicine from the University of London in 1987, and conducted higher and specialist surgical training in London, Essex, and Norwich. He undertook further training with two awarded fellowships that took him to the USA to conduct research at Harvard Medical School and visit major other US centres. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1991. Upon the completion of a trauma fellowship in Austria in 1997, Mr Gibbon was appointed consultant surgeon. He established a specialist knee surgery unit at York Teaching Hospital, introducing arthroscopic cruciate ligament reconstruction and meniscal repair, partial knee replacement, and enhanced recovery pathways. In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Gibbon has been involved with medical education, teaching surgical techniques to trainees and orthopaedics to students at Hull York Medical School. Many of his senior fellows (trainees) are successful Consultant Surgeons throughout the world, mostly in the UK, but also in India, Israel and Libya. Mr Gibbon has given many lectures, nationally and internationally, teaching and demonstrating knee surgical techniques in the UK, Spain, India and Brazil. He is actively involved in research studies evaluating outcomes of knee replacement surgery. He carries out over 300 knee replacements annually, his results in the National Joint Registry (NJR) being in the top 5% in the UK.
