About Dr Andrew Elkington

Dr Andrew Elkington is a consultant cardiologist in Reading, Berkshire with expertise in assessing chest pain, breathlessness and palpitations, alongside blackouts, abnormal ECGs, heart valve disease, suspected heart failure and cardiovascular risk in patients with a family history of heart disease. He privately practises at The Berkshire Clinic where he is a partner, while his NHS base is the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. Dr Elkington, who provides comprehensive general cardiology care with a particular focus on non-invasive cardiac investigation and advanced cardiac imaging, was appointed as a consultant cardiologist in 2009 and is clinical lead for cardiac imaging at his NHS base. He's established and developed successful cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) services in Reading and has overseen the expansion of CMR services at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, as well as setting up CMR at Spire Clare Park. Dr Elkington trained at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1997. He completed cardiology training in London, Bristol and Australia, and was awarded an MD in cardiac magnetic resonance from Imperial College London in 2006. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2013. His clinical interests centre on the accurate, non-invasive assessment of cardiac symptoms, and the evaluation of cardiac dysfunction using echocardiography and CMR. Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Elkington is actively involved in education and service development. He is a cardiology tutor at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, responsible for the training of junior doctors, and training lead for physician associates. He is co-director of the FICE echocardiography course for intensive care physicians and lectures regularly to GPs on general cardiology. He also serves on the departmental accreditation committee of the British Society of Echocardiography and inspects echocardiography departments seeking national accreditation. Dr Elkington is a member of the British Cardiovascular Society, the British Society of Echocardiography and the British Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. He is frequently invited to speak at regional and national meetings, reviews manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and provides ECG reporting services for wellness centres across southern England.
