About Mr Abtin Alvand

Mr Abtin Alvand is a distinguished consultant orthopaedic surgeon based in Oxford who specialises in knee surgery. His areas of expertise include partial knee replacement, total knee replacement, revision knee replacement, as well as prosthetic joint infection and arthroscopy. Mr Alvand is part of the renowned Oxford Knee Group. With over 20 years’ experience, he also practises for Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and serves as an executive committee member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee. He is among the highest volume revision knee surgeons in England based on data from the National Joint Registry. Mr Alvand qualified from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Schools of Medicine in 2001, along with an intercalated BSc in Physiology. He undertook orthopaedic training on the Oxford programme, before completing two prestigious post-CCT, sub-specialist clinical fellowships in complex hip and knee surgery at Oxford and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Mr Alvand’s advanced training also includes a fellowship in peri-prosthetic joint infection at the Rothman Institute in the USA and a European Bone and Joint Infection Society travelling fellowship in 2017. His DPhil, awarded by the University of Oxford in 2014, focused on improving methods in partial knee replacement surgery. In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Alvand is an honorary senior clinical lecturer at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology, and Musculoskeletal Sciences. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications and is also an invited faculty and member of the International Consensus Group for peri-prosthetic joint infection.
