Ankylosing spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic condition that causes inflammation in the spine and other parts of the body. It falls under the category of axial spondyloarthritis. X-rays can reveal changes in the spine associated with AS. In contrast, non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis is a related condition where spinal changes are not visible on X-rays but may be detected using an MRI scan. This information focuses on AS, although the symptoms and treatments are quite similar for those with non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis.
When to seek medical help
If you experience ongoing symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), it's important to consult your GP. Should your GP suspect you have the condition, they will likely refer you to a rheumatologist, a specialist in muscle and joint disorders, for additional tests and appropriate treatment. These tests may involve blood samples and imaging scans. You can learn more about how ankylosing spondylitis is diagnosed.
